“Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward Him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”)” – John 20:16 (NIV)
She had grown up in Magdala, a prosperous town on the west bank of the Sea of Galilee. Mary Magdalene had not prospered. How could she when she was filled with demons that controlled her mind? Her delusions locked her in a nightmare world, isolating her from small pleasures and simple kindnesses.
But when Jesus appeared on the scene, it became different for Mary. He seemed neither afraid nor repulsed by her illness. He had called her name as though He had known her all His life. As He advanced toward her, she felt a great light advancing toward her, forcing the darkness away. Suddenly, her familiar companions were themselves begging for mercy, but no mercy was given.
Mary, possessed by seven demons, was restored to her right mind. Her bondage became a thing of the past. For three years, she followed the Rabbi across Galilee and Judea, providing for Him out of her small purse (Luke 8:2-3). Wherever they went, she felt privileged to tell her story, grateful to be among His growing band of followers.
Everyone in Magdala had marvelled at the change in her. How could Mary not love such a man? How could she not want to do everything for Him? She showed her gratitude by staying close to the One Who had set her free. She loved to witness healing after healing, to be stirred, surprised, and refreshed by His teaching. This, indeed, was a joy to a woman unaccustomed to joy.
On the resurrection morning, Jesus called her by name: “Mary!” Jesus not only knew Mary’s name, but He knew everything about her. He remembered the day He had cast the demons out of her. He remembered how she showed her gratitude by her many practical acts of kindness.
Our Saviour knows the intimate details of our lives. Even when you are tempted to lose hope, when life seems too empty to go on, when grief overwhelms you and your problems crush you – just remember – Jesus cares! And you, too, can go on and show gratitude to your Saviour.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, make me like Mary Magdalene, who followed You because of an overwhelming sense of gratitude and love for Your extravagant grace. Help me surrender my darkness to You and flood me with the light of Your presence. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
